Over the years we noticed the rising numbers of commercial vacancies in the city center of our former home town Krefeld. A grid consisting of 15 Streets, an area a bit larger than half a square-kilometer, had 84 abandoned stores and restaurants in 2011. The number rose to 112 in 2013 and to 121 in 2015.

Every two years we have photographed the empty salesrooms and we will continue to do so in the future.

The new city map we have created shows the single streets with all lots ever recorded by us. From North to South, and from West to East. Lots that persist since 2011 have full opacity. The lighter ones have either disappeared or are new.

After some years the process of vacancy seems to be a quite dynamic one. Even though the plain numbers point to a steady decline one can notice shifts, movements, partial improvement. And every single image tells its own story.
